Thank You, Light Cafe!

The NCTS Team Accomplishes the Challenge Education Course!

While participating in the Challenge Education Course, NCTS students practiced teamwork, communication, perseverance, and problem-solving skills.  Students exercised these important life skills as they accomplished a series of challenging tasks.

"The games were challenging. Once we began to listen to each other and communicate effectively,
we were able to complete the games. We discovered that teamwork and communication
are the keys to completing the challenges." -Asia

"The games took a lot of perseverance and teamwork.  At first, we were not getting along or helping each other. Then, we started to encourage each other, and we started to do a lot better."  -Alex

"As long as we worked as a team, the games were not challenging at all. We just kept trying to help each other.  We were able to finish the games because we acted like a team." Xavier

"Communicating was a challenge for us, but we overcame the challenge by creating game plans.  In conclusion, we all had good ideas, and we were able to put our ideas together
to come up with a solution." -Cordell

"We contributed our personal strengths to the games. I was able to offer my communication skills to help my team.  By communicating verbally and with hand gestures, I was able to help my team members line up on a balance beam in order of their birthdays." -Sidney

"My favorite game was when we lined up on the balance beam in order of our birthdays. This was hard because most of us couldn't talk and some of us were blindfolded.  This game took a lot of different communication skills."  -Jodeci

Guest Speakers: NCTS Alumni

"NCTS alumni told us they miss being in NCTS. They told us that we will miss it too, next year.  I think I will too." -Kourtney

"Alumni students told us to do all of our work, be on time, and take advantage of the help." -Asia

"The alumni told us to take advantage of the help we get in NCTS. They said that this will help us more than we are aware of right now."  -Kordell

"I remember that the alumni told us that NCTS is a good way to start off our freshmen year of high school.  They said we should be happy we are in this program because not everyone gets to have this opportunity."  -Xavier

Thank you, Mrs. Achgill!

NCHS Librarian, Mrs. Achgill provided students a "buffet" of books.
Mrs. Achgill led students through a group activity that allowed students to
"taste" a variety of books.  Ultimately, every student found a book to devour!

"I like my book, If I Grow Up, because I can picture everything I read about in this book.  It's like I have a movie going on in my head."  -Marcus

"I like the book, I Beat the Odds by Michael Oher. It is the story from the movie, Blind Side. I like the book because it is from Michael Oher's point of view.  I recommend this book to football fans because you get an inside look on Michael's life before he was drafted." -Cordell

"My book, Tyrell, is a very gripping drama that makes you interested in the main character from page one!"
-Alex

"I would recommend Tyrell to males who like books that talk about real life struggles and how to get out of the situations." -Raven

"The Purge is interesting because it relates to high school and the challenges that people face.  I recommend The Purge to other freshmen because it is about a student who is trying to fit in with school, sports, and friends." -Mychaela

Essential Agreements

NCTS students and teachers worked together to create Essential Agreements. Using post-it notes, students expressed their academic and behavior expectations.  Based on these student-driven expectations, the NCTS team created six Essential Agreements that all
students and teachers agree to honor this school year.

NCTS Students Discover Their Career Interests

photographer:  Wyesha

"Mrs. Williams helped us learn how to cook.We made casseroles for the Graphic Design class so they could eat while they celebrated their contest. I would like to take this class in the future,
so I can work in the restaurant." -Mikala

"Graphic Design is the best class I have ever been to.  I enjoy drawing and the classroom atmosphere is calm; I like that a lot.  I will definitely take this class during my junior and senior years." -Macyn

"I loved the atmosphere in Culinary Arts. Everyone is just doing their job, listening to the chef, and handling business."  -Karron

"I like Digital Media Arts because it is really laid back and everyone is calm. I like that we get to work by ourselves. This makes it easier to work because I have my own stable environment to work in.  Also, everybody is like family in that class. Everybody is cool with each other in there."  -James

"I got to learn how to disassemble a computer.  I got to learn how to watch out for viruses on websites. I also got to learn how to make a computer safer and run faster."
-Michael (IB Learner Profile Badge:  Knowledgeable)
